I first came to Berlin in 1993 through Alongside Ministries "undercare program" and at the age of 18, I lived with Rev. Gerhard Witte's family in northeast Berlin for one year. Through the Wittes, I became acquainted with the work of the Berlin City Mission (Berliner Stadtmission: www.berliner-stadtmission.de), a daughter organization of the Protestant Church of Germany.
After returning to the States, I completed a college degree in Philosophy at Seattle University, gathered work experience and began a Masters of Divinity degree at the Fuller Seminary NW extension. But, I could not resist the pull to go back to Berlin. I returned in May of 2004.
In Berlin, I began working towards a German degree in Theology at the State University and resumed ministry alongside Rev. Gerhard Witte in two City Mission congregations. (www.berliner-stadtmission.de/170.html) I came under the care of Alongside Ministries in August of 2006, as long-term cross-cultural minister. Through the financial and spiritual support of Alongside, I was able to concentrate on supporting the work of the Kingdom alongside Rev. Witte while being trained for leadership within the German Church.
After changing from a Theology degree to a more hands-on degree, similar to that of Congregational Development and Care, in 2008, I expect to finish my studies in July 2010. My thesis is entitled “The Self-understanding of the Protestant Church in the Socialist Society of the German Democratic Republic from 1960-1990 and Its Ramifications for the Church Today.”
In addition to my studies, I have been the solo pastor of a small City Mission congregation in the neighborhood of Blankenburg, Berlin since May 2009 (http://www.berliner-stadtmission.de/110.html). And here, by the grace of Lord Jesus Christ, I hope to stay - growing, learning and serving the Church in Berlin -- in the years to come.
